Two Nippon Yūsen Kabushiki Gaisha Menus from 1928

ENQUIRE

Watanabe, Kazan ... [et al.][illustrated by].

[Tōkyō?] : Nippon Yūsen Kaisha, 1928.

Two colour woodblock-printed one-leaf menus from the S.S. Hakozaki Maru and the Taiyō Maru. The menu from the S.S. Hakozaki Maru (Commander T. Sekine) is dated Thursday, 2nd August, 1928, and the Taiyo Maru menu is dated Sunday, January 29th, 1928. Both ships were NYK (Nippon Yūsen Kaisha) vessels. While the artist of the Taiyō Maru menu is unknown, the Hakozaki menu is stamped (in the block) by notable artist Watanabe Kazan. The menus consist of a range of Japanese and foreign dishes, including meals such as ‘Veloute d`Volaille Rafraiche’, ‘Chirashi Sushi’, ‘Stewed Terrapin’, and ‘Smoked Ox-Tongue’. Both menu designs are in a decidedly oriental (as opposed to traditionally Japanese) style.

A little foxing to the verso of the S.S. Hakozaki menu, slightly visible from the recto. Otherwise fine. 2 leaves. 26.3 x 19.5 cm. Text in English.
