[Japan] : Senow, Symphony ... et al., Taishō to early Shōwa period [1920-30s].
A collection of 47 pieces of sheet music published in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s. Sheet music published during this period in Japan is known for its beautiful Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs, and these examples do not disappoint. Most of the pieces are for harmonica or piano, although a few are for violin. The 47 pieces come in three formats: large (30 x 22.5 cm), medium (26.2 x 19 cm), and small (18.8 x 13.2 cm). Twenty-eight of the pieces are large, sixteen are medium, and three are small. The songs contained in the sheet music include Song of the Volga Boatmen, Faust, If Winter Comes, Humoreske, Carmen, The Fisherman's Daughter, and so on. Several of the pieces have lithographically-printed upper wrappers. Fifteen of the large format pieces have identical upper wrappers (in differing colours) designed by famous Japanese illustrator Takehisa Yumeji. The wrappers of at least seven of the other large-format pieces were also designed by Yumeji. A charming although quite worn collection of sheet music with interesting Japanese Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs.
Occasional ex-ownership signatures and stamps. Stains, browning, and soiling to some pieces, and tears, creases, chipping and wear to many pieces. Corners of several pieces torn off. Holes to left margin of two pieces where they seem to have been previously bound together. Good only. 47 pieces. Text in Japanese and English.
