Nihonbashi, Tōkyō, and other locations : Maruya Shōten, Kawashima Shōten ... [et al.], ca. early 1900s.
A collection of six sample booklets containing a total of 128 tipped-in squares of beautiful real Japanese fabrics. These folding booklets would have been shown by scroll-mounters to customers, who would then pick fabrics to be used in the mountings of their scrolls. Many of the fabrics appear to be silk, and the patterns featured, many based on traditional Chinese patterns, are both creative and elegant. The intricate gold brocade designs in many of the fabrics are a particular highlight, as are the deep colours of many of the samples.
6 folding booklets. Some soiling, stamps, creases, and small handwritten notes to booklet wrappers, not affecting fabrics. Wormholing to 4 fabric samples. Evidence of areas where fabrics were probably removed and new ones tipped-in, possibly by the scroll-mounting company itself. While there are two blank spaces for fabrics in one of the booklets, the lack of a handwritten number in the right margin (which all other samples in the booklet have) suggests that there were never samples tipped-in to the spaces. Overall very good, fabrics in near fine to fine condition. Largest pamphlet measures 26.7 x 9.5 cm, smallest measures 19.7 x 11 cm. Largest fabric sample measures 6.4 x 7.7 cm. Text in Japanese.
