木曽路之山川 [Kisoji no Yamakawa, “Mountain River on the Kiso Road”]
[Utagawa], Hiroshige I [illustrated by].
[Japan: unidentified publisher, ca. early to mid-20th century].
A set of three unused postcards delicately woodblock-printed with Hiroshige's famous illustration of the snowy Kiso Valley. Originally printed in 1857, Mountain River on the Kiso Road, a triptych from Hiroshige's untitled setsugekka ("snow, moon, and flowers") series, is one of the artist's most acclaimed works. The fact that the carver and printer have been able to reproduce the artwork on such a small canvas with considerable detail shows professional prowess. Hiroshige's signature and stamp have been added to the printing blocks for the left and centre prints. A mounted postcard reproduction of perhaps one of the most widely known ukiyo-e triptychs.
Three colour woodblock-printed postcards, complete, affixed to a white backing card. Prints very lightly foxed. Small mark to central print. Minor corner bump to backing card, sticker removal to verso. Else near fine. Postcards measure 14 x 9 cm; backing card measures 21.9 x 31.1 cm. Text in Japanese.
