Chobokure Chongare: Shirai Gonpachi Komurasaki Hiyoku Tsuka Monogatari ["Chobokure Chongare: The Story of the Grave of the Tragic Lovers Shirai Gonpachi and Komurasaki"]

[Author/s unidentified].

Bakuro-chō, [Tōkyō]: Yoshidaya Shōkichi, [ca. late Edo period (1840-60s)?].

A chobokure chongare adaptation of the story of murderer and robber Shirai Gonpachi (Hirai Gonpachi (ca. 1655-1679)) and his famous lover, the courtesan Komurasaki. Such tales were typically recited by street performers. The dense text and eight-column layout shows the influence of jōruri texts and shōhon. The publisher, Yoshidaya Shōkichi, was one of the most prolific producers of popular song, rhyme, and humour booklets in the Edo period.

One volume, presumed complete, on double-leaves, fukurotoji style. Original wrappers worn and soiled. Binding re-sewn. Occasional stains, discolouration, and creases to leaves. Small loss to foot. [8] unpaginated leaves, including wrappers. 19 x 12.4 cm.
