[Japan: publisher unidentified, ca. late Edo period (1840-60s?)].
A collection of short stories, probably humorous, presented as vocal recitations. The index lists eight of the ten songs or recitations included in the volume as kae-uta, lyrics to be sung to the melody of a well-known song instead of the song's usual lyrics. Like jiguchi, kae-uta used an audience's knowledge of wellknown songs and poems to elicit a laugh. The popular Ahodarakyō (a parody of a Buddhist sutra) is among the verses offered. The daisen panel woodblock-printed directly onto the upper wrapper gives three mon crests rather than a title; they are those of Shimazu Yoshihiro, Mōri Terumoto, and Yamauchi Kazutoyo, all major figures in the Battle of Sekigahara. The doublepage illustrated frontispiece presumably depicts this historic event.
One volume, presumed complete, on double leaves, fukurotoji style. Original upper wrapper worn and soiled, lower wrapper wanting. Occasional marks and small wormholes to text. Binding string cut, margins trimmed. [1], 12 leaves. 7.8 x 17.7 cm.
