[An album of circular motifs]
[Artist unidentified].
[Japan, ca. early to mid-Meiji period (1860-90s)?]. Manuscript.
A hand-painted album of fifteen circular floral designs by an unidentified artist. Each motif is captioned with the name of the flower or plant depicted. The illustrations were originally painted on a scroll, which has been bound concertina-style and given wrappers. It seems that the artist impressed into the paper the outlines of the designs before going over them with brush and ink. A collection of lovely floral illustrations in a style that would no doubt have been greatly admired by Art Nouveau artists.
One concertina-bound (orihon) volume, presumed complete. Contemporary wrappers, worn, with a few marks, extremities soiled. Occasional marks and small holes to leaves. Paper repair to recto of one leaf. Unpaged. 32.1 x 15.3 cm
