Shunkyōshū: kyōka eiri ["Collection of spring fancies: illustrated kyōka poems"]
Tokkansai, Sachō [selections by]; Harukawa, Goshichi [illustrated by].
Karaku [Kyōto]: Shōfūsha [blocks cut by]; Yoshida Shinbē [book bound by], Bunka 13 [1816].
A collection of kyōka poems by various poets, each accompanied by a colour woodblock-printed illustration, usually playful, by the surimono artist Harukawa Goshichi (Kamiya Hōshū, 1776-1831). Goshichi, who also produced kyōka poetry, shunga, and satirical works, is said to have had a hand in cutting printing blocks for several works he illustrated. The 'selector' of the included poems, Tokkansai Sachō, seems to have worked as a poetry judge in Kyoto whilst also composing his own kyōka. The word shunkyō in the title of the work refers to a New Year gathering of poets in which printed works were given as gifts between acquaintances. It seems that this book was printed to commemorate such an event. The fact that all of the poems are accompanied by colour illustrations suggests the production cost was substantial.
