[Meika shoga shunjū-jō ("Spring and autumn album of calligraphy and illustrations by the masters")]
[Shibata], Zeshin ... [et al.] [illustrated by]; Saigō, Takamori ... [et al.] [calligraphy by].
Tōkyō: Fukuendō, Meiji 13 [1880].
A volume of alternating double-page spreads of woodblock-printed calligraphy by eminent political figures and double-page spreads of woodblock-printed nanga-style illustrations. The table of contents lists seven calligraphers: Prince Komatsu Akihito (1846-1903), Sanjō Sanetomi (1837-1891), Kido Takayoshi (1833-1877), Katsu Awa (Kaishū, 1823-1899), Yamaoka Tesshū (1836-1888), Chō Sanshu (1833-1895), and "the late" Saigō Takamori (1828-1877). The six artists are Ikehara Nichinan (1830-1884?), Fukushima Ryūho (1820-1889), Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891), Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913), Taki Katei (1830-1901), and Kikuchi Yōsai (1788-1878). Although a set of five books was published shortly after this work under the same title, this volume seems to have been produced as a stand-alone work. It may in fact be a later edition of an album of the same title published in Meiji 12, as the content is virtually identical.
One concertina-bound (orihon) volume, presumed complete. Boards possibly non-original, lightly soiled and with a few marks. Very minor soiling and creases internally. Housed in non-original custom slipcase. [7 double-spreads of calligraphy and 6 double-spreads of illustrations]. 18.2 x 12.3 cm.
