Shogachō ["Album of calligraphy and illustrations"]
Taki, Katei ... [et al.] [illustrated by]; Yamaoka, Tesshū ... [et al.] [calligraphy by].
Tōkyō: Asano Eizō, Meiji 11 [1878].
A volume of eight woodblock-printed bunjin-ga style illustrations of landscapes, animals, and flowers interleaved with eight double-page spreads of woodblock-printed calligraphy. Among the artists are Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913), Taki Katei (1830-1901), and Hattori Hanzan (1827-1894); Yamaoka Tesshū (1836-1888) and Seki Sekkō (1827-1877) are two of the calligraphers. While the manuscript title panel notes that the work is the 'first series', it is unclear if any other series were published. The work seems to have been published by the jihon doiya Asano Eizō. This is surprising, as the firm is almost exclusively associated with bright nishiki-e prints depicting famous places, a far cry from the subtle woodblock prints seen in this album.
One concertina-bound (orihon) volume, presumed complete. Wooden boards possibly original, mounted daisen title panel in manuscript presumed non-original. Light discolouration and occasional marks to leaves. Ex-ownership stamp to upper pastedown. Pastedowns waved. [6 p. preface, 8 double-page illustrations, 8 double-page calligraphy spreads]. 19.5 x 12.5 cm.
