[An untitled collection of kibyōshi title panels]
Kyokutei, Bakin, Jippensha, Ikku, Santō, Kyōden ... [et al.] [original works authored by]; Katsukawa, Shuntei, Utagawa, Toyohiro ... [et al] [illustrated by].
[Edo (Tōkyō)]: Tsuruya Kiemon, Tsutaya Jūzaburō, Nishimura Yohachi ... [et al], [ca. mid-Edo period (1790-1830s?)].
A collection of 27 woodblock-printed title panels (daisen) for kibyōshi, removed by a previous owner from their volumes and thus available as a set, allowing close comparison of stylistic features. The set includes daisen for volumes authored by some of the most accomplished gesaku authors of the Edo period (e.g. Kyokutei Bakin, Santō Kyōden, and Jippensha Ikku) and produced by some of the era's most prominent publishers (e.g. Tsuruya Kiemon, Tsutaya Jūzaburō, and Nishimura Yohachi). Two of the daisen, for the kibyōshi Saigagake midori no hayashi, feature Roman letters. The array of different sizes, shapes, fonts, ornamental borders, illustrations, writing forms, and textual information provided on the daisen may reflect the differing tactics publishers used to market their books to consumers and furthermore provide insight into targeted readerships.
Twenty-seven loose leaves, each backed with washi, housed in plastic sleeves in a non-original album. Occasional creases, marks, ink stains, scribbles, and rubbing. A few repairs to minor losses. Each no larger than 13 x 11 cm.
