Onna imagawa oshie no tamazusa: shinkoku kaisei ["Precepts for women and teachings in excellent compositions: newly cut and amended"]
Ikeda, Zenjirō [Keisai Eisen] [edited by]; Keisai, Eisen [illustrated by].
Tōto [Edo]: Kansendō, Tenpō 14 [1843].
A pedagogical text for girls and young women, edited and illustrated by the artist Keisai Eisen (1790–1848). The work is split into two parts, Onna imagawa oshie no tamazusa and Kyōkun onna imagawa. While other editions include an index leaf, this edition seems to have been published without it. This work exemplifies one of the interesting marketing strategies used by some Edo period publishers: the first leaf in the book is numbered 'seven', meaning that prospective buyers flicking to the end of the book to see if they were getting their money's worth in pages would be deceived into thinking the work was longer than it actually was. A copy of a popular textbook for girls, in a very clear impression.
One four-hole-bound (yotsutoji) volume, presumed complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers, creased, worn, scrapes and tears to lower wrapper. Mounted title panel (daisen) lacking, binding re-sewn. First 14 leaves opened at folding edges, thus extremities frayed. Minor thumbing and soiling to leaves. Partial loss to two pastedown advertisements. 7-20, 15 leaves. 25.8 x 18.3 cm.
