Benbenkan, Koryū [text by]; Eisai, Hokutai [Katsushika Hokutai] [illustrated by]; Shikitei, Sanba [preface by].
[Edo (Tōkyō): Yamatoya Kyūbē, Bunka 3-4 (1806-7)].
A collection of kyōka - 'mad poems' - edited by the kyōka poet and shogunate retainer Benbenkan Koryū (1746-1818). Koryū was also engaged as a judge for the Biwa-ren group (or 'Biwaren Poetry Club') of kyōka poets active in the Edo period. The poems are interspersed with five single-page and five double-page illustrations by the artist and kyōka poet Katsushika Hokutai (active ca. 1800-40s), one of Hokusai's pupils. Several poems by Hokutai are included in the selection. A work produced for the Biwa-ren, with delicate woodblock-printed scenes illustrated by one of Hokusai's lesserknown pupils and a preface by the author, artist, and kyōka enthusiast Shikitei Sanba (1776-1822). No copies traced in OCLC.
