Seiyō komamono nokorazu ["Unexcelled Western sundries"]
Kanbe, Senzō [produced by].
Kanda, [Tōkyō]: Shinseidō, [ca. Meiji 20s (1887-97)].
A flyer printed around the end of the nineteenth century for Shinseidō (or Shinshōdō), a Western sundries shop in Kanda, Tōkyō. The illustration on the right side of the flyer, which is probably woodblock-printed, shows the store owner standing between two customers who are talking about the quality, strength, and low cost of the goods at the store, the fame of the owner, the store's trust value, and so on. On the left of the print appears some sort of coupon, printed with metal movable type, for the customer who has received the flyer to bring into the store. The border of the coupon features illustrations of various Western goods - shoes, garments, accessories, and so on - presumably available for purchase at the store.
One loose leaf, complete. Creases, light discolouration, and small marks. Inconsequential loss to upper left corner, not affecting text or illustration. 23 x 31 cm.
