Dōke kyōga-zukushi ["A collection of humorous caricatures"]
[Artist unidentified].
[Tōkyō-fu: Kogaya Kotsugorō, Meiji 8 (1875)].
A colour woodblock-printed montage of six humorous scenes, featuring women selling hot beans, a trapped oni (ogre) in postage-stamp patterned robes, a Japanese man winning a game of igo ('Go') against a Chinese man, and so on. The very loose theme of the print seems to be the use and abuse of money. The motifs and characters on the figures' kimono may reveal more about the satirical scenes than first meets the eye. A challenging but intriguing print perhaps satirising economic changes stemming from the opening of Japan to trade with the West in the early Meiji period.
One loose woodblock-printed leaf, complete. Extremities slightly trimmed and worn. A few light marks and stains, ink slightly smudged in a few places. Small loss to left edge, repaired with washi paper. Several other washi paper repairs to verso. 35.5 x 23.6 cm.
