Souvenir and programme of the visit of Prince Fushimi to England
[Author unidentified].
London: Burgess William & Co., [ca. 1907].
A crepe-paper poster detailing Prince Fushimi Sadanaru's itinerary for his 1907 trip to England and Scotland. The poster features a colour woodblock-printed floral frame and movable-type printed text. Although the statement of responsibility at the bottom of the print claims the poster was printed and published by Burgess William & Co., it is possible that, as was often the case in the Meiji period, the frame was woodblock-printed in Japan, the poster sent without any printed text to the UK, and only the type printed by the UK printer. Thousands of these mixed-media crepe posters were sent from Japan to Europe in the late 19th century to early 20th century. This one has a double-layered connection with Japan - not only is the frame and crepe paper Japan-inspired (if not Japan-made), but so is the text.
One chirimen (crepe-paper) leaf, complete, slightly browned and with a few small marks to corners. Several folds and creases, mainly confined to the right margin. Sticker removal to lower right corner. Text misregistered with frame, as usual. 37.4 x 36.7 cm. Text in English.
