[An untitled work based on the Kachikachi-yama folktale]
Kobayashi, Kiyochika [signature and seal of].
[Japan, ca. mid-Meiji period (1870-1900s?)]. In manuscript.
A playful hand-painted fan paper with a signature and seal attributed to the ukiyo-e artist Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). The design is based on the folktale Kachikachi-yama and shows a tanuki racoon dog in a mud boat on the left-hand side being towed by a rabbit in a wooden boat on the right-hand side, with a full moon in the middle. A humorous work possibly suggestive of unexpected friendship - the folktale does not typically mention the rabbit towing the tanuki in his dissolving mud boat (in fact it typically shows the rabbit striking the tanuki on his head with an oar in order to sink him).
One hand-painted fan paper. Numerous folds and light soiling. Last panel on right side blank, folded over. Mounting residue to verso. 51 x 15.8 cm at longest point.
