ENQUIRE

[Six printed items relating to Japan]

[Various illustrators].

[Japan and Germany: various publishers, mid-Edo period to early Meiji period (1669-1840s?)].

Six printed items available as a set, including four Japanese copperplate-printed leaves (including three mounted on card), one copperplate-printed leaf from Montanus (showing Hirado), and one pocket-sized volume of illustrations. The loose Japanese copperplate print is titled Morokoshi nijūshikō ryakuden ("Biographical sketches of the twenty-four paragons of filial piety in China") and was produced in the late Edo period in Kyoto by Shunsendō (thought to be Hashimoto Chōgetsu). The mounted Japanese copperplate print titled Tōsei yūshi bimeikan ("Mirror of famous warriors of our time") is believed to have been produced by Okada Shuntōsai in the late Edo period. The studios of the mounted Japanese copperplate prints captioned Sanjūsansho Kannon ("33-Kannon Pilgrimage") and "Also Similar To Those Of Palestine" [sic] are unidentified; these works were probably also produced in the late Edo period. The Montanus leaf (p.41-42) is from Gedenkwaerdige Gesantschappen der Oost-Indische Maetschappy in't Vereenigde Nederland, aen de Kaisaren van Japan (1669) and shows the castle of the Shogun living in Firando (Hirado). The pocket-sized book titled Byakkotai gachō ("Album of the Byakkotai") was published by Ōhashidō in Tokyo in Taishō 2 (1913) and features 31 illustrations of the Byakkotai ("White Tiger Unit" of young samurai) fighting in the Boshin War (1868-1869). An interesting collection featuring several very finely engraved and printed images produced in Japan.

Three mounted leaves, two loose leaves, and one concertina-folding (orihon) volume. Volume with occasional tears to gutters, ex-ownership signature to colophon, binding shaken. Small occasional chips, tears, and marks to leaves. Hole to one leaf. Montanus leaf creased. Volume measures 9 x 12.8 cm. Montanus leaf measures 29 x 19.5 cm. Other leaves vary but are all under 13 x 20 cm not including mountings.
