(Shinpan) Kannin goryō kogane no kotonoha ["(Newly published) Profit from perseverance: golden phrases"]
[Kyokutei, Bakin (text by); Kitao, Shigemasa (illustrated by)].
[Edo (Tokyo): Tsuruya Kiemon, Kansei 8 (1796)].
The second volume of a comical work about a young man (Zenjirō) and woman (Osechi) who, taking to heart their parents' teachings about perseverance paying off in the long run, travel through life pursuing various artistic accomplishments and apprenticeships. These milestones are represented in the book by imaginary place names the protagonists are seen passing through. A somewhat surreal kibyōshi produced through a collaboration between the famed author Bakin and the acclaimed artist Shigemasa. The cannibalistic horse with a human head is a definite highlight.
Second volume (of three). One koyori karitoji-bound volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Mounted e-daisen title panel present. Original wrappers worn and lightly chipped. Ex-ownership inscriptions to lower pastedown and wrapper. Thumbing and marks internally. Leaves numbered six to ten. 17.1 x 12.3 cm.
