Kisō Tenrai ["Inspired and Bizarre Ideas"]
Miyatake, Gaikotsu [edited by]; [Kitagawa], Utamarō, Hishikawa, Moronobu ... [et al.] [illustrated by].
Ōsaka: Miyatake Gaikotsu, Gazoku Bunko, Meiji 43 [1910].
An album of highly entertaining, if perplexing, illustrations produced by the oft-incarcerated journalist and author Miyatake Gaikotsu (1867-1955). A note at the beginning of the work attributes the first appearance of the featured illustrations to Gaikotsu's Kokkei Shinbun newspaper. Gaikotsu's album includes eight leaves of humorous illustrations colour woodblock-printed on high-quality washi paper; the remaining leaves are printed in movable type and feature in-text illustrations. One of the highlights is an interpretation of the famed Eight Views of Omi trope using only movable type characters. Several of the woodblock-printed illustrations are lifted from scenes by ukiyo-e masters including Utamarō and Moronobu. The title of the work parodies the term kisō tengai ("unexpected idea"). No physical copies traced outside of Japan in OCLC.
One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers creased and lightly soiled, extremities and original woodblock-printed daisen title panel chipped. Offsetting to title. Creases and light damp stains to endpapers and text/illustrations. [1], 15 leaves. 26 x 18.5 cm.
