[Untitled album of surimono]
[Utagawa], Kunisada, [Shibata], Zeshin ... [et al.] [illustrated by].
[Japan, ca. late Edo to early Meiji period (1820-70s?)].
An album featuring 34 tipped-in surimono (privately commissioned woodblock prints) produced in the Edo and Meiji periods. The examples include poetry-themed haikai surimono illustrated with fish, birds, monkeys, people, and objects by artists including (but not limited to) Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) and Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Also included are miscellaneous works, for example an advertisement written by acclaimed author Jippensha Ikku (1765-1831). One print announces Tomimoto Buzennojō's bestowing of a 'poetry name' to a woman poet. Several others feature the use of metallic pigments and shōmenzuri burnishing. An interesting collection that would benefit from further research.
34 surimono (including one duplicate) tipped-in to non-contemporary concertina-folding (orijō) album. Several examples folded to fit album size. Considerable wear, browning, stains, creases, and occasional wormholing, losses, and repairs to prints. Album measures 33.7 x 24.1 cm. Smallest print measures 12 x 16.6 cm; largest measures 38.2 x 52 cm.
