Shuzenji Onsen Meishoki ["Famous Places in Shuzenji Onsen"]
Hattori [Mantei], Ōga [text by]; Seisei [Kawanabe], Kyōsai [illustrated by].
[Shizuoka]: Gotō Senzō, Meiji 13 [1880].
One of the few non-satirical works Ōga and Kyōsai produced together, Shuzenji Onsen Meishoki is an illustrated guidebook to Shuzenji Onsen in Izu, Shikuoka Prefecture. The work was produced in the same hanshi-bon size as the Kyōsai-Ōga zasshi but has outer card wrappers provided by the publisher (Gotō Senzō), is slightly longer, and is not intended as a humorous work. The work was published several years after the Meiji 5-8 Kyōsai-Ōga 'bubble'. Kyōsai visited Shuzenji Onsen to convalesce after he served his prison sentence in 1870. The outer title of the work is Izu no Kuni Shuzenji Onsen Meishoki. A similar work, Shokoku Onsen Yūranki ("Account of Travels to Onsen in Various Regions"), was authored by Ōga, illustrated by Utagawa Kunitoshi (1847-1899), and published in Meiji 15 (1882). From the number of copies of Shuzenji Onsen Meishoki traced in online library databases, it appears the work was produced in a much larger print run than the Kyōsai-Ōga zasshi.
One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers lightly soiled and creased. Red pigment lifted from original daisen title panel. Light continuous stain to gutter. 10, [1] leaves. 21.9 x 14.2 cm.
