Zushū Shuzenji Onsen Meisho Kaisei-zu ["Revised Map of Famous Places in Shuzenji Onsen, Zushū"]
Mantei, Ōga [reproduced by]; Seisei [Kawanabe], Kyōsai ["clearly transcribed" by].
[Shizuoka: Gotō Senzō?], Meiji 14 [1881].
Printed on one large (34.5 x 51 cm) leaf using a very finely cut woodblock, Zushū Shuzenji Onsen Meisho Kaisei no Zu is an oddity of the Kyōsai-Ōga corpus. Like Shuzenji Onsen Meishoki, the work introduces famous places in Shuzenji Onsen, Izu Province, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was not produced as a humorous work. It was almost certainly published by Gotō Senzō, the Shizuoka-based hanmoto who produced Shuzenji Onsen Meishoki the year before. Zushū Shuzenji Onsen Zenzu, a colour woodblock-printed map of the same location, was produced by Kyōsai, Ōga, and the distributor Gotō Kizaemon in the same year as this single-pigment map, perhaps explaining why it is presented as the "revised" version. The word Zushū in the title is another name for Izu Province. Kyōsai visited Shuzenji Onsen to convalesce after he served his prison sentence in 1870. A scarce example of a single-sheet bird's-eye view map designed by Kyōsai.
Single sheet woodblock-printed on one side, complete. Central fold, a few small ink marks, minor tears to extremities, washi paper repairs to verso. 34.5 x 51 cm.
