Kappa Sōden Kyūrizukai ["A Kappa's Talks on Science: How to Use Cucumbers"]
Kanagaki, Robun [text by]; [Kawanabe], Kyōsai [illustrated by].
Edo [Tōkyō]: Bankyūkaku, [preface dated Meiji 5 (1872), but printed Meiji 15 (1882)].
Issues six and seven of Kokkei Zansai Bukuro ("A Collection of Humorous Leftovers"), containing the full text of the 'first series' (all published) of Robun and Kyōsai's kokkei-bon Kappa Sōden Kyūrizukai (1872). Kokkei Zansai Bukuro was the publisher Bankyūkaku's re-packaging of several of Robun's earlier bestsellers - Kappa Sōden Kyūrizukai, Aguranabe (1871-1872), Ukiyo Karakuri Seiyō Megane (1873), and Tsūzoku Kyūri Banashi (c. 1872). The title parodies Fukuzawa Yukichi's Western science textbook Kinmō Kyūrizukai (1868). Interestingly, Kyōsai produced the illustrations for the similarly named physics textbook Kyūri Ingo (or Kunmō Kyūri Nazo, authored by Kiyohara Michihiko and published by Bankyūkaku) in the same year he produced those for Kyūrizukai. This Kokkei Zansai Bukuro edition of Kyūrizukai records early toba-e-style illustrations by Kyōsai and reflects the lasting popularity of Robun's satirical works.
