Tōkyō: Kinokuniya Saisuke ... [et al.], Meiji 6-7 [1873-1874].
A complete two-volume set of Fujita Kuni's translation of a work by the (American) Harvard law professor Theophilus Parsons (1797-1882), possibly his Elements of Mercantile Law (1856). The preliminary calligraphy for the presentation leaves was provided by the famed reformer and statesman Katsu Kaishū (1823-1899). The first volume is subtitled On the Dominant Foot (or On Profit); the second is subtitled Examples of Great Deception and On Paying Off Debt. The work may have been produced in response to the enactment of the Interest Rate Restriction Law by the Dajōkan (Grand Council of State) in the same year as publication. The translator, Fujita Kuni (d. 1924), also produced several works on UK law and government and one other translation of a work by Parsons (titled Gasshūkoku Mingyōritsu ("Civil Commercial Code of the United States")) in 1876. A pioneering textbook on commercial law, featuring two colour woodblock-printed pages designed by Kyōsai.
Two four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volumes, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers worn and stained. Publisher's stamps, small tears and chips, and light stains to title pages. Occasional creases and large but fairly light stains internally. Ex-ownership stamps to lower pastedowns.
