Kaika Shindai Toppyō Shiwa ["Outrageous Poems and Stories: New Titles for a Civilised Age"]
Ryūsuitei, Tanekiyo [text by]; Seisei [Kawanabe], Kyōsai [illustrated by].
Tōkyō: Ryūshindō ... [et al.], Meiji 13 [1880].
A complete set of this collection of humorous poems illustrated with comical and risqué scenes by Kyōsai. The books are designed to appear Chinese: the text compiles Chinese-style kyōshi poems, is in kanbun, and is bound in the six-hole kōkitoji ("Kangxi" or "Noble") style. The author, Ryūsuitei Tanekiyo (1823-1907, also known as Ryūsuitei Bokō and Ryūsuitei Shōzan) produced at least 150 works from the Kaei to mid-Meiji period (around 1848-1884) and is believed to be the shunpon artist Koikawa Shōzan. In 1854, he produced an erotic parody of Mantei Ōga's gōkan Shaka Hassō Yamato Bunko. Format-wise, Toppyō Shiwa is similar to Fukujō Komatarō's three-volume Kaika Ketsutan Kyōshisen (1878-1880, occasionally spelled Kaika Anasagashi Kyōshisen), which was also illustrated by Kyōsai. No copies traced outside of Japan in OCLC.
Three 'series' in three six-hole-bound (kōkitoji) volumes, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers a little worn, soiled, and creased. First two volumes measure 15.9 x 9.9 cm; v.3 measures 16.3 x 9.9 cm.
