Kaichū Jūhō ["Important Treasures, Pocket-Sized"]
[Creator/s unidentified].
Ōsaka: Honya Kitarō, [ca. late Edo to early Meiji period (1840-60s)?].
A portable booklet of charts and volvelles used in astrology for fortune-telling, featuring six woodblock-printed panels. Three of the panels feature intact volvelles used to quickly determine days and directions relevant to "lucky" periods, Eta Ursae Majoris (as it was believed that those who fought in the direction of the star would win and those who fought against it would lose), and the nine heavenly stars. The charts provide information about the "direction of great evil" on different dates and monthly dates relevant to the locations of the nine heavenly stars. A well-preserved copy presenting a fascinating example of the use of volvelles in astrology.
One folding leaf, lightly soiled and rubbed. Small hole and inscription to margin. 12.4 x 10.2 cm when folded, 12.4 x 38.6 cm when unfolded.
