Otoshidama ["New Year's Gift"]
Yamada, Jinzō [edited by].
Nagoya: Shōeidō, Meiji 26 [1893].
A large hikifuda (advertisement) produced for Hayashi Shinbun-ho, a shipping company based in Hamamatsu that also produced newspapers and magazines. The hikifuda is presented as an otoshidama (New Year's gift), presumably in an attempt to encourage more people to pin up the sheet in their homes or shops. A calendar for the upcoming year (1894) is featured on the right - another inclusion used to encourage customers to display the advertisement prominently. Both woodblock and lithographic printing techniques appear to have been used in the advertisement.
One folding sheet, printed on one side, wormholed. Creases, occasional stains, and marks. Chips to extremities. 50.4 x 68.7 cm.
