Manji ["Quicksand"]

Tanizaki, Junichirō [text by]; Nakagawa, Shūzō [binding designed by].

Tōkyō: Kaizōsha, Shōwa 6 [1931]. First complete (or "book") edition.

Manji, by the author and Nobel Prize in Literature nominee Junichirō Tanizaki (1886-1965), is a novel that delves into the complex feelings of love and betrayal experienced by the narrator Sonoko regarding her relationships with her husband, her lover Mitsuko, and Mitsuko's fiancé. The style of the novel was influenced by James Joyce's interior stream-of-consciousness narrative. The story was first published serially in Kaizō magazine between 1928 and 1930, with the first complete edition (or "book edition") following one year later. Manji was also published (together with two other Tanizaki works) as volume 3 of Tanizaki Junichirō Zenshū (produced by Kaizōsha in August of 1931). The book edition offered for sale, however, was published four months earlier, in April of the same year. At least six films have been based on the novel, the most recent of which was released in 2023. An influential work that remains popular and relevant to this day.

One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, complete. Original wrappers lightly worn. Binding string cut, not affecting overall tightness. Minor crease to upper opening corner of first few leaves. Browning and occasional foxing to endpapers, leaves, and textblock edges. Offsetting to endpapers also. Small loss to corner of one leaf. Paraffin jacket presumed non-original. Housed in original slipcase, extremities worn and chipped, small losses to lower board. [1], 199 p. 18.6 x 25.8 cm.
