[Untitled diptych of a woman in snow]
Kōchōrō [Utagawa], Kunisada [illustrated by].
[Edo (Tōkyō)]: Sanoki [Sanoya Kihei], [ca. Bunka 12 - Tenpō 13 (1815-1842)?].
A diptych by Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III, 1786-1864) of a woman (possibly the character Osono from Kanadehon Chushingura ("The Treasury of Loyal Retainers")) in a beautiful dark blue kosode and black zukin (hood) walking through the snow. The woman closely resembles the bijin (beautiful woman) featured in the Yamato Yoshino print from the Honchō Fūkei Bijin Kurabe ("Beauties Compared with Scenic Spots of Our Country") series similarly designed by Kunisada and published by Sanoya Kihei. The lower print features an aratame-in (censor's seal) and the seal of the publisher Sanoya Kihei (Kikakudō).
Upright diptych (kakemono-e), complete. Two vertical ōban sheets woodblock-printed on one side. Mounted on thin washi paper. Browning, creases, and a few marks. Slight trimming. Each print measures approximately 37 x 25 cm.
