Nigatsu Yōka Kinshō no Hito Uke ni Iri ["February 8th, Luck to Those Born Under the Metal Element"]
[Kawanabe], Kyōsai [illustrated by].
Nihonbashi, [Tōkyō]: Takekawa Seikichi, [ca. Meiji period (1875-1890)?].
Uke-e - lucky prints - were presents sent to people entering their year of luck (whether a year was lucky for an individual was divined using the onmyōdō (Yin-Yang) method). The auspicious symbols featured in this print include a crane, a rising sun, Ofuku, Fukusuke, Daikokuten (one of the Seven Lucky Gods), and Mt. Fuji (on Ofuku's fan). The inclusion of mice in the bottom of the print conveys Kyōsai's characteristic humour. The placement and content of the text in the upper right differs from the Meiji 30 (?) edition of the print.
Upright diptych (kakemono-e), complete. Two vertical ōban sheets woodblock-printed on one side, affixed at overlapping section. Slight discolouration. A few light marks and creases. 73 x 24.8 cm.
