[Untitled scroll of feather patterns]
[Creator unidentified].
[Japan, ca. mid to late Edo period (1800-1840s)?]. In manuscript.
A handscroll recording 42 types of feathers used in arrow-making. Each illustration is captioned with a number and the name of the pattern depicted. Most of the feathers used in arrow-making in Japan were taken from birds of prey, and many of the examples in this scroll are described as eagle feathers. In addition, a hand-painted illustration of an eagle has been tipped-in to the inner mounting of the scroll. An interesting record related to Edo period weaponry.
One scroll, complete. Wooden jiku (scroll shaft). Wear, soiling, and losses to preliminary 'mounting' section. Continuous stain to scroll foot. Occasional creases and tears. Handwritten inscription at end of scroll. 20 x 3 cm; 20 x 159 cm when unfurled.
