ENQUIRE

Fujin Sokuhatsu no Hinagata ["Models of Chignons for Women"]

Ashihara, Kuninao [illustrated by].

Nihonbashi, [Tōkyō]: [Inoue Kichijirō], Meiji 18 [1885].

A nishiki-e providing instructions for creating five foreign hairstyles: the "Western up-do", the "Western low-style", the "Italian style", the "Italian low-style", and the "twisted thread style". Western chignon and bun hairstyles boomed in popularity among Japanese women in the Meiji period. The woman in traditional Japanese dress in the centre of the print seems to gaze down in astonishment at the two women sporting the trendy hairstyles pictured in the foreground (one of whom is holding a Western-style book). An interesting record of the adoption of foreign women's fashion in Meiji Japan.

One leaf, woodblock-printed on one side, complete. Light soiling, browning, and marks. Margins trimmed. Mounting residue to verso. 35.5 x 22.8 cm.
