One of the earliest complete Japanese translations of Das Kapital. The translator, Takabatake Motoyuki (1886-1928), discovered an English edition of Marx's work during time he spent in jail for an article on the 1908 political rally known as the Red Flag Incident. Takabatake consulted both the original German edition and the English edition in translating Das Kapital but relied predominantly on thelatter. His first translation of the work was published between 1920 and 1924 by Daitōkaku and Jiritsusha as volumes one to ten of Marukusu Zenshū. Although commentaries and partial translations preceded it, his Daitōkaku/Jiritsusha translation appears to be the first complete Japanese translation of Das Kapital published. Takabatake produced a corrected edition of the translation with the publisher Shinchōsha between 1925 and 1926. Ever the perfectionist, he continued to correct errors he found in his earlier translations and produced his Kaizōsha edition between 1927 and 1928, the year of his death. Takabatake's definitive Kaizōsha translation of Das Kapital influenced decades of Japanese editions of the work. 

Three parts in five Western-bound volumes, complete. Original boards lightly scraped and mottled, spine of v.2 rubbed blank. Original slipcases with occasional stains, scrapes, and wear, head of v.1 slipcase torn, opening edge of v.5 chipped. Small hole to spine of v.3. Light browning, marks, and occasional foxing internally. A 24-page pamphlet advertising Kaizōsha's twenty-volume series of translations of Marx and Engels and an order card for the work has been loosely inserted into volume four.
