Dokuhin Benran ["Guide to Poisonous Things"] = Poisonous Plants: I. Collection
Ono, Motoyoshi [selections by]; Murayama, Tokujun [proofread by]; Mogami, Kōkichi [illustrated by].
Tōkyō: Ono Motoyoshi, Meiji 11 [1878].
The first collection (of two) of Ono Motoyoshi's privately published guide to poisonous plants native to Japan. The volume features copperplate-printed illustrations and descriptions in Japanese of a total of twenty plants. Each plant is captioned with its Linnean name and Japanese name in romaji. The English title page suggests Ono had a partially foreign readership in mind when he published the book (which is, incidentally, also a wonderful and scarce example of a hōhaisō (旋風葉) binding). Although other impressions appear to have been woodblock-printed in colour, this one has been left as-is, with two pages coloured by hand.
One hōhaisō-bound (wrap-around) volume, complete. Original wrappers with a few marks, scrapes to extremities. Original daisen panel lacking. Ex-ownership stamp to titles. Occasional wormholes, small marks, and creases internally. Colours hand-applied to two pages. [12] leaves. 15.2 x 10.9 cm.
