Atagoyama no Zu ["View from Mt. Atago"]

Kobayashi, Kiyochika [illustrated by].

Ryōgoku, [Tōkyō]: Matsuki Heikichi, Meiji 11 [1878].

A colour woodblock-printed illustration designed by the artist Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) of the view of Tōkyō from Mt. Atago. Kiyochika's characteristic use of shadows and areas of flat colour creates an image resonant of both Japanese and European painting styles. This convergence of aesthetic styles, a distinguishing feature of many Meiji artworks, is also reflected more directly, perhaps, in the kimono of the Japanese woman standing and the Western-style top hat of the man sitting. A striking scene by an important yet relatively overlooked artist of the Meiji period.

One leaf, woodblock-printed on one side, complete. Minor soiling, browning, and marks, mainly to extremities. Light fold to centre. Central tear repaired with washi paper on verso. Lightly mounted on card with two washi ribbons. 25.3 x 37.4 cm.
