[Two untitled sketchbooks by an amateur artist]
Tanaka, Yūtai [illustrated by].
Ōsaka, Shōwa 11-15 [1936-1940]. In manuscript.
Two sketchbooks of stunning landscapes in pencil and watercolours by Tanaka Yūtai, an amateur Yōga (Western-style) artist. Most of the illustrations, which depict factories, ports, ships, people, and landscapes in and around Osaka, Kyoto, and Mie, are dated and captioned with the location pictured. One volume records illustrations painted between December of Shōwa 11 (1936) and February of Shōwa 12 (1937); the other compiles scenes painted between April and September of Shōwa 15 (1940). The ex-ownership stamps give the name of the artist and his address in Osaka.
Two volumes. Original wrappers lightly marked and foxed, artist's inscriptions and stickers to upper wrappers. Bindings lightly shaken. Stationer's sticker to lower pastedown of one volume. Minor occasional marks and browning internally. Volumes measure approx. 19.5 x 14.5 cm.
