Yamakawa Furiwake Sugoroku ["A Game Sheet of Mountains and Rivers Divided"]
Ichiyōsai [Utagawa], Toyokuni [III] [illustrated by].
Akasaka, [Edo (Tōkyō)]: Iseya Kanekichi, [Kōka 4 (1847) - Kaei 5 (1852)].
A scarce multi-ōban sugoroku game sheet by Utagawa Toyokuni III (Utagawa Kunisada) based on scenes from folktales located at mountains or rivers. The squares in the lower three prints feature river-based locations and those in the top three mountain-based locations. Each square is captioned with the name of the river or mountain, the name of the folktale character/s pictured, and, of course, instructions for which square to jump to next. The figure in the furidashi square, a storyteller, is pictured recounting the folktales to a group of children. Sugoroku were typically printed on one leaf or on several leaves pasted together. The prints in this set are unaffixed, presumably as sold (thus scarce).
Six ōban nishiki-e, complete. Browning, wear, marks, small wormholes, light soiling, central creases. Small losses to lower left corners. Versos reinforced with washi paper. Each print measures approximately 35.2 x 25.7 cm.
