Miki, Kōsai [illustrated by].
Tōkyō: Hōzandō, Meiji Mizunoesaru [1872].
An illustrated encyclopedia in kanji and romanised Japanese, with definitions in mixed kana and kanji. The volume was compiled and presumably illustrated by Miki Kōsai (1830-1884), also known as Utagawa Yoshimori I. Books, furniture, clothes, ships, construction tools, modes of transport, accessories, weapons, games, musical instruments, armour, household goods, gardening tools, Western items like a camera, binoculars, a microscope, electricity lines, and other miscellaneous objects are pictured and described. While the title page and daisen title panel indicate the volume constitutes the "first series", it appears that no later series were published under the same title. The work was probably produced for Japanese people learning the Latin alphabet, as the ex-ownership stamps suggest, although foreigners learning Japanese vocabulary and characters may have also found it useful.
One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers, worn, creased, with ex-ownership notes and non-original daisen panel in manuscript. Binding thread cut. Ex-ownership stamps to first two leaves. Occasional annotations internally, mainly in pencil. 30 leaves. 17.8 x 11.8 cm.
