Jiyū no Kotowari ["The Logic of Liberty"] = On Liberty
Mill, John Stuart [original text by]; Nakamura, Keitarō [Masanao] [translated by]; E.W.C. [Clark, Edward Warren] [preface by].
Suruga, Shizuoka: Kihira Ken'ichirō, Meiji Mizunoesaru [1872].
The first full Japanese translation of John Stuart Mill's On Liberty (originally published in London in 1859). The translator, Confucian (later Christian) scholar Nakamura Masanao (1832-1891), lived in the UK between 1866 and 1868 and is perhaps best-known for his translation of Samuel Smiles's Self-Help, which experienced incredible popularity in Meiji period Japan. The preface was provided by the American oyatoi-gaikokujin Edward Warren Clark (1849-1907). Nakamura's translation was also published as a set of six books (with volume two split into two books but continuously paginated). However, the content of both five-book and six-book sets appears to be identical. The title is sometimes transcribed as Jiyū no Ri.
Five four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volumes, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers marked and lightly mottled. Wear to daisen panel of v.1. Occasional browning, foxing, and marks internally. Considerable stains to two leaves in v.5, continuous but lighter stains on following leaves. V.5 upper wrapper lightly stained, binding string cut. Ex-ownership stamp to first text page of all volumes except v.1. Head and upper left corners bumped. Publisher's seals to pages facing titles. V.1 is slightly larger than the other volumes, suggesting it is part of a different printing. [3], 2, 1, 1, 27; 2, 59; 34; 33; 29 leaves. 22.6 x 15.3 cm.
