Kanadehon Chūshingura, Dai-Kudanme ["The Treasury of Loyal Retainers: Act Nine"]
Kōchōrō [Utagawa], Kunisada [illustrated by].
[Edo (Tōkyō)]: Yorozuya Kichibē, [ca. Edo period (1830-40s?)].
A scene from Act 9 of Kanadehon Chūshingura, one of Japan's most popular plays, illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III, 1786–1864). The work seems to show Tonase, sword in hand, preparing to kill her stepdaughter Konami, Kakogawa Honzō (Tonase's husband and Konami's father) disguised as a wandering Zen priest at the gate, and Oishi, the wife of Oboshi Yuranosuke, entering through the sliding screens. The title, Kunisada's name, and a few other details are recorded on the screens in the background. The dogtooth border is characteristic of Chūshingura works. An uncommon work.
One ōban nishiki-e, complete. Light wear, discolouration, and marks. A few small pinholes to margins, one wormhole to upper right corner. 25.2 x 37.4 cm.
