[Two untitled scrolls signed "Yamamoto Shōun"]
[Yamamoto], Shōun [signed by].
[Japan, ca. Meiji period (1890-1930s?)]. In manuscript.
A set of two (unrelated) scrolls signed Shōun 昇雲. One scroll features two scenes from the traditional Japanese fairytale "The Tongue-Cut Sparrow". The scene at the top of the scroll shows the sparrows' inn, the lower the reunion of the kind old man and the young sparrow he nursed back to health. The accompanying scroll (right) features late summer/early autumn flowers and dragonflies. Yamamoto Shōun (1870-1965) was an ukiyo-e artist and illustrator who studied Nanga style painting under Taki Katei (1830-1901). The seal on the scroll on the left reads Shōun 昇雲. The seal on the scroll on the right is, unfortunately, illegible to me.
Nidan hyōsō (two-layered) mounting (left) and sandan hyōsō (three-layered) mounting (right), original jiku (scroll-knobs) present. Pigments on silk. Small marks to mountings, light wear and scrapes to mounting versos. Tape repair to mounting foot of sparrow scroll. Browning to mounting and silk of flower scroll; light soiling to lower left corner of same scroll. Sparrow scroll mounting measures approx. 175.4 x 18.8 cm, silk canvas measures 105.7 x 12.5 cm. Flower scroll mounting measures approx. 197 x 32.5 cm, silk canvas measures 117.4 x 26.2 cm.
