Hanagasane ["Layers of Flowers"]
Ichida, Yaichirō [illustrated by].
Kyōto: Ichida Yaichirō, Meiji 31 [1898].
An album of one hundred colour woodblock-printed kimono designs featuring creative motifs such as toys, flowers, landscapes, armour, fish, musical instruments, deer, birds, people, turtles, and so on. The captioned illustrations occasionally feature the use of metallic pigments and shōmenzuri burnishing. This copy, previously used at a dyeing factory, has been bound without the four pages of colour samples and eighteen page encyclopedia of mon designs typically included at the back, possibly for convenience. Hanagasane was reportedly exhibited at the Exposition universelle de Paris in 1900, where it won a silver medal. The textile firm that produced the book, Ichida, was known for its stunning designs.
One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Non-original wrappers lightly worn. Browning, thumbing, creases, and wear internally. Some fukurotoji split. A few small losses. Bound without the four pages of colour samples and eighteen-page encyclopedia of mon designs. Most tissue guards present. [5] leaves + 100 pages of illustrations. 30.3 x 22.2 cm.
