Hibiki ["Reverberations"]
[Sugiura, Hisui (designed by)].
[Kyōto: Fushimi Yamamoto-jō, ca. Shōwa period (1930-60s)].
A set of five plates illustrated with a motif designed in 1932 by famed graphic designer and artist Sugiura Hisui (1876-1965) for the cigarette brand Hibiki. The set comes with one of the original cigarette packages (flattened) featuring Hisui's design. The Hibiki cigarette package design by Hisui was apparently re-purposed by the Kyoto-based sake company Yamamoto Honke (run by Yamamoto Tatsuemon) to advertise their similarly named alcohol brand Taishū Hibiki. In the plate design, the characters Taishū (大衆) have been added above the central character Hibiki (響) present in Hisui's original design to spell the name of the company's sake brand. It is unknown whether Yamamoto received the permission of Hisui and the cigarette company to re-use the design. An eye-catching set.
Five plates + one cigarette package (flattened). Light scratches and marks to plates. One plate with small protrusions under the glaze made during production. Wear, stains, and small chips to cigarette packet. One plate slightly imperfectly printed. Plates are 16 cm in diameter.
