[Untitled painting]
[Yoshizawa, Renzaburō (painted by?)].
[Japan, ca. early Shōwa period (late 1930s-1940s)]. Oil painting.
A painting featuring a mother and her baby believed to have been rendered by the illustrator Yoshizawa Renzaburō (1893-1967). Yoshizawa was a Western-style painter who studied under Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924) and was prolific in producing illustrations for children's books and magazines. This painting is described on the accompanying box as an illustration producted for the cover of an issue of Kinder-Book, one of the Japanese magazines Yoshizawa regularly contributed to. It is unclear if this painting was ever used as a cover for the magazine, but a similar (not identical) illustration by Yoshizawa adorns the cover of series 12, issue number 1. A beautifully expressive work believed to be painted by an important figure in the history of children's illustration in Japan.
Oil painting in wooden frame. Browning, scratches, minor marks, and small holes to canvas. Scuffs and scratches to frame, sticker to frame verso. Housed in cardboard case. Frame measures 50.4 x 38.4 cm; painting measures 44.7 x 32.9 cm.
