[Untitled album of original paintings and sketches by prominent illustrators]
Matsuda, Seifū, Nonogase, Banka, Hirezaki, Eihō, Mizushima, Niou ... [et al.] [illustrated by].
[Japan, ca. late Taishō period (1917-1922)?].
An album of original paintings, sketches, caricatures, vignettes (frames, in-text ornaments, etc.), and more by acclaimed illustrators for Japanese magazines. Many of the illustrations portray kabuki actors, performances, and stage designs. Two draft covers for the kabuki periodical Shin Engei and one for the magazine Shin Katei are included. Most of the illustrations are either captioned in the margin with the name of the illustrator or include the signature or mark of the illustrator in the image itself. Illustrations by the following artists are believed to be included: Itō Shinsui (1898-1972), Hirezaki Eihō (1880-1968), Suzuki Miekichi (1882-1936), Nakanishi Rikkei (dates unknown), Nonagase Banka (1889-1964), Uda Tekison (1896-1980), Terada Takeo (1908-1993), Mizushima Niou (1884-1958), Shimizu Miezō (1893-1962), Matsuda Seifū (1892-1941), Nagoshi Kunisaburō (1885-1957), and Morita Hisashi (1890-1971). Most of the illustrations are by Shimizu Miezō and Matsuda Seifū. Several other artist's marks have yet to be identified. Notes on the colours and sizes of the illustrations presumably made by magazine editors are often present in the margins. Detailed illustrations by Miezō of trick props for kabuki performances and kabuki wigs are highlights. Most of the illustrations are loosely inserted in the volume; the remainder are tipped-in. A valuable record of illustrator networks that also offers insights into the publishing process for magazine illustrations in the Taishō period.
One card scrapbook, extremities lightly scuffed. Illustrations loosely inserted or tipped-in to scrapbook. Light stains, marks, and annotations (mainly pencil) to illustrations. 30 x 21.5 cm.
