Seirō Mutamagawa ["Six Jewel Rivers in the Pleasure Quarters"]
Kikukawa, Eizan [illustrated by].
[Japan: Yamamotoya Heikichi, ca. Edo period (1814-17?)].
Tsutanosuke of the Aka-Tsutaya is depicted in this scarce nishiki-e by Kikukawa Eizan (1787-1867). This work is part of a series in which Eizan represents Yoshiwara courtesans as the six Tamagawa ("Jewel Rivers"). In this image the courtesan Tsutanosuke represents Noda no Tamagawa- the Jewel River of Noda in Michinoku Province, as is hinted by the Shinkokinshū ("New Collection of Ancient and Modern (Japanese Poetry)") poem to her right and the plovers in the background.
One vertical ōban woodblock print, believed to be from a series of six. Wear, browning, small marks, creases, light stains, and occasional small holes to paper. Chips to extremities. Minor washi paper repairs to verso. 38.2 x 26 cm.
