Pengin-chō no Hanashi ["The Story of Penguins"]
Tada, Keiichi [written by]; Tada, Haruki [illustrated by].
Tōkyō: Shunyōdō, Taishō Gannen [1912].
An introduction to penguins, written and illustrated by Tada Keiichi (Tada Haruki, 1883-1959). Tada travelled to the South Pole with Shirase Nobu in 1910 as the expedition's secretary/record keeper. The text by Tada includes information on the physical features of penguins, the taste of penguin meat, how to catch a penguin, how to feed a penguin, the habits of penguins, different types of penguins, and so on. A waka poem composed by Tada on penguins is included, as is an illustration and textual record of Tada playing the shakuhachi flute to a group of penguins while in Antarctica. Pages 60-65 feature the lyrics to the expedition's theme song. This work is volume one (of two) of the Nankyoku Miyage ("Souvenirs of Antarctica") series which introduced the strange animals the expedition team encountered in Antarctica to Japanese children. The volume includes a photographic illustration of the author and occasional penguin-themed in-text illustrations. Scarce.
