Grand Concert Parisien, Rentree de Mme Bonnaire [...]
[Concert Parisien (produced by)].
[Paris: Concert Parisien, 1890?].
A chirimen (crepe paper) poster advertising various acts at the Concert Parisien. One of the acts is the famous cafe performer Yvette Guilbert (1865-1944), who joined the Concert Parisien around 1889 after leaving the café-chantant Divan Japonais. Artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) painted many portraits of Guilbert, and his famous Divan Japonais poster features the dancer Jane Avril and writer Édouard Dujardin enjoying one of her performances. The same year this poster is believed to have been published Guilbert also performed at the Moulin Rouge. Crepe paper posters featuring woodblock-printed frames produced in Japan were popular across England, Germany, and France in the late nineteenth century with the rise of Japonisme. The central text was typically printed later using movable type by the buyer in Europe. An advertisement for the Republican and anti-clerical periodical La Lanterne, which featured contributions from figures like Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant, is included at the base of the print. A nice example of an art-based export from Japan that experienced popularity the late nineteenth-century Europe, with interesting links to a popular Montmartre figure of the period.
