[Seiyō Jiki Teikokuhan ("Model of Western Time Measurements")]
[Kanshūtei (preface by)].
[Tōto (Tōkyō): publisher unidentified, ca. early to mid-Meiji period (1870-1890s)].
A small volume providing Western equivalents of Japanese time measurements. The names of daytime measurements (e.g. "the time of the snake") are printed in red, while those of nighttime are printed in black (e.g. "the time of the boar"). The thirteen clock faces included provide a key to help the reader equate Western times with the solar terms of the lunisolar calendar. This is why the Western hours align with different Japanese times depending on the clock face; traditional Japanese times changed (relative to Western hours) depending on the season. The cupids at the top of each page mimic the ornamentations on many mechanical clocks produced in the West during the period.
One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers lightly worn and creased. Ex-ownership stamps to first and last pages. Occasional light creases, minor stains, and ink marks internally. Ex-owner's brush and ink scribbles to lower pastedown. [7] leaves. 13 x 8.3 cm.
